Alumni Annual Fund Appeal

Just the other day one of our very active alumni visited me on campus to discuss several of the exciting new projects the academy has planned for this year. After our talk, he mentioned that he had been trying to drum up attendance for the 2016 Homecoming, but was saddened by some of the responses he had from fellow alumni. Almost to a person, those not coming told him “all they want is my money!”
As Head of School I can tell you that statement is a very upsetting one for me too. Like all private schools, MMA stands to gain anytime alumni become involved with the school. While monetary donations are an important part of making up the difference between what we are able to charge as tuition and the actual costs of running the academy, alumni can provide much more than that.
Alumni can:
•           Volunteer to help with events or tasks like helping to fold the alumni newsletter.
•           Participate as speakers during classes or at one of our academic events. Career Day is a great example of this.
•           Provide or assist in locating businesses making internships available for our cadets.
•           Like and share MMA social media posts.
•           Assist at education fairs by talking to prospective cadets families about MMA.
•           Run a club.
•           Offer creative suggestions to staff.
•           Hold conversations with cadets about their time spent at MMA.
•           Provide material items such as supplies for classrooms, equipment for programs.
•           Donate their labor toward renovation or maintenance projects.
•           Help recruit potential cadets and even earn money back for their referrals that do enroll.
These are just some of the many productive and appreciated ways for alumni to assist the academy.
For those who can and who choose to make a monetary donation, gifts can be made for memorials, towards specific programs/purposes or remain undesignated which goes directly toward supporting annual operations. Monetary gifts can be made by cash, check, or credit card and via the academy website and are fully tax-deductible.
Donations can also be made as legacy gifts to help support MMA when someone passes and to memorialize a family member. Legacy gifts include donations as part of a will, trust, or making MMA a beneficiary on one’s life insurance policy. The general rule is that tuition only pays for about 80% of what is needed to operate the academy, for the rest donations are needed. Our new van, the rappelling tower being built, and kilts for the pipe band were all made possible by alumni support.
As you can see there are many ways alumni can support the academy and the current cadets who are enrolled here. The dollar amount of what alumni can give is not as important as their action in doing something that helps provide current and future cadets with the best boarding and day school programs possible. I speak for the entire staff and faculty here at MMA when I say that we are extremely appreciative of all our alumni do for us! Whether it is in helping to take cadets to church on Sundays, supplying gift bags to graduating seniors, or lecturing a class on their life experiences we need your help and support. Non Nobis Solum!
Thank you for all you do!
