Military School Isn’t Just for Boys

Massanutten Military Academy is proud to be one of only 16 co-ed military schools in the country, and our girls are ready to lead.
In the last five years we have had two female Battalion Commanders for the school year and one female Battalion Commander over summer school. This means that our entire corps of cadets was led by and reported to a female cadet. However, females in the corps is not a new thing. When Massanutten Military Academy opened in 1899, it was co-ed, but we didn’t allow female boarders until 1972.

Today, we have young women from all over the world. Just like the male cadets, our female cadets are expected to follow the military standards that govern our day and dress and to focus on their education in our unique learning environment. And, just like the male cadets, there are many leadership opportunities available to our female cadets. Being a part of the Battalion Staff is just one avenue of leadership, there are also several leadership positions within Alpha Company, the female company within the corps. There are also opportunities in the various clubs, sports, and activities to earn a leadership role. In fact, this past year, our drum major was a young woman from China.

We try to foster independence, self-reliance, and discipline in all of our cadets and in doing so boost their self-esteem. Being female doesn’t hinder your opportunities here at Massanutten, and we hope that you will give us a chance to help you discover your inner strength.

You know your child can do more but is not getting the attention needed in their current environment to reach their full potential. We know that choosing the right school for your child can be difficult because each child is so unique. We believe students should experience school as it should be, a place where children are educated in an environment that leads them to thrive and encourages their maximum potential.
