Colonel's Camp Travels to Gettysburg

Colonels Camp traveled up to Gettysburg and were taken on a tour of the battlefield, the museum, and the Cyclorama and film.
The movie is called “A New Birth of Freedom,” and was specifically commissioned for the battlefield. The film is narrated by Morgan Freeman and focuses on the battle in the larger context of the Civil War and history itself. It also reminds us of President Abraham Lincoln’s famous address and reminds us that “freedom, like power, will always be contested” and should be defended. Cadet Skylar Robertson liked the museum because it was interactive, but the movie was his favorite part.

They cyclorama was created in 1880 and is 377 feet in circumference and 42 feet high! It shows the battle and features a 3D foreground, an overhead canopy, and lighting and sound effects. It is an immersive experience that engaged the cadets as they walked through. However, the battlefield itself engaged much of the cadet’s attention and for Cadet Vera Brown, Little Round Top was her favorite part, but she also thought that the museum was fun.

Massanutten Military Academy is situated in a unique location which gives us easy access to many historical sites from throughout American History and we are able to integrate that into our instruction. It’s one thing to read about some of these events, it is another to be able to stand on the grounds where they took place.
