STEM Plants the Seeds for Success

Massanutten Military Academy has a robust STEM curriculum which allows the cadets to gain hands-on experience with tasks and experiments. As part of the Middle School Life Science Class this year, the cadets (comprised of 6th - 8th graders) began a garden.
The garden is located on the outskirts of the baseball field, and due to the recent unpredictable weather, the cadets were just now able to put their plants in the ground. As part of the experience, the cadets began their plants as seedlings and documented their growth up to this point. They cared for the plants indoors, allowing them to sit out in the sun on nice days, until they were able to be transplanted.

This is an ongoing experiment which will continue next year with an Environmental Sustainability Course and the Life Science, Biology, and Earth Science courses. The cadets in these STEM courses will continue to tend the garden until it begins to produce yields which will then be taken down to the Cook & Kitchin Mess Hall to help them continue serving healthy meals.

To date we have planted corn, green beans, peppers, peas, cucumbers, and cantaloupes. This project was headed by Mrs. Sarah Treese, one of our STEM faculty members. You can read more about Mrs. Treese on our blog, Colonel's Cadence.

You know your child can do more but is not getting the attention needed in their current environment to reach their full potential. We know that choosing the right school for your child can be difficult because each child is so unique. We believe students should experience school as it should be, a place where children are educated in an environment that leads them to thrive and encourages their maximum potential.
