While high school football seems to be a tradition as old as time, many schools, particularly in the Northern Virginia area, are doing away with the sport altogether. They reasoning behind the change is because of a lack of interest. A recent report from the Associated Press stated that the National Federation of State High School Associations says that high school football has seen a 4.5% drop in enrollment nationwide from 2006 to 2016.
How MMA’s Approach to Athletics Differs from Traditional Schools
At Massanutten, athletics are an integral part of our entire approach to education. We encourage and promote cadets to participate in sports. Our various sports give cadets the opportunity to develop an understanding of competition and teamwork that can be applied to other areas in their life far beyond the field and graduation. In the fall, we offer football, JRTOC sports, boys and girls soccer, and girls volleyball. In the winter, cadets can participate in boys and girls basketball, JRTOC sports, rifle, weightlifting, and PG (post graduate) basketball. Finally, in the spring baseball, lacrosse, JROTC sports, softball, tennis, and track and field are offered.
Every Cadet Plays a Sport
We believe every cadet should be involved at Massanutten, which is why every cadet plays a sport. We offer fifteen various sports throughout the three seasons of the year, so there is something everyone. Having cadets participate in sports gives them a positive outlet for energy and allows them to develop or fine-tune their athletic ability. These skills not only set them up for athletic excellence, but also reinforce the importance of physical wellness.
Values that Can be Applied On and Off the Field
Teamwork is everything to our sports teams at Massanutten. Our teams are comprised of students from all over the globe who have likely not been playing on the same team, but we see this as an advantage. It allows our cadets to get to know each other and learn how to work with people who are different than them and still be successful. Eventually, teammates often turn into lifelong friends. Finally, playing a sport while keeping up with their studies and other obligations teaches cadets time management and responsibility skills that they can use for the rest of their lives.
If you or your child has experienced a change in their athletic situation, consider checking out MMA.
