Summer break is a fun and relaxing time that is eagerly anticipated by both students and teachers. However, there are some negative consequences that can accompany this three-month learning gap.
An article on the National Association for Year Round Education website reports that the average student loses roughly 2.6 months worth of knowledge during a traditional summer vacation. Massanutten Military Academy’s Summer Programs are the perfect solution to this problem, as they offer in a variety of subjects and allow students to continue their education without the distraction of their other courses. Two featured programs this year are our STEM Camp and ESL.
STEM
It’s no secret that STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) is a rapidly-growing industry in the United States. However, only 36% of high school students are ready to take a college-level science course, while only 44% are ready to take a college-level math class (according to the National Math and Science Initiative). Here at MMA, we have recognized the demand for STEM and have begun offering two two-week STEM Camp sessions.
These sessions are designed for students in grades 6-12. In the two-week course, students will explore topics including Energy and the Environment, Computer Science, Engineering, Flight and Space, and Bio-medical. Participants will receive a certificate acknowledging their enrollment and completion of the courses at the conclusion of the session. The first session will be offered 7/1/2017-7/14/2017 and the second 7/22/2017- 8/4/2017.
ESL
At Massanutten Military Academy, we are proud to have an extremely diverse student body. MMA draws students from all over the globe to attend and many are learning English for the first time. Each summer we offer an English as a Second Language (ESL) course for international students to develop and strengthen their English reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. The course itself focuses on basic essay writing, grammar, and reading comprehension. Upon completion, enrolled students will be able to write basic essays, edit writing samples, and discuss the main ideas of reading assignments.
