JROTC Raiders Team Travel to Harrisonburg for Successful Meet

The Massanutten Military Academy JROTC Raiders team traveled to Harrisonburg High School to compete against Bedford Educational & Technology Center, Brunswick High School, Fishburne Military School, Orange County High School, Powhatan High School, Harrisonburg High School, and Spotsylvania High School. The meet had five events that included the team 5k run, first aid and litter carry, team physical fitness challenge, logistics relay, and the one rope bridge. Our Raiders finished third in the first aid and litter carry event, which earned them a trophy!

At the end of the competition, each school entered their top male and female cadet to compete for the title of Best Raider. Cadet Johnson took second place in the male category and Cadet Barnes took second in the female category. Both missed finishing first by only a few seconds.

The Raider Competition, or “Raider” as it is more commonly known, is a very popular athletic competition held within the Junior ROTC high school programs around the United States. It is the equivalent of the Army ROTC “Ranger” competition in college, only far less dangerous but equally challenging. For those not familiar with Raider competitions, these events are similar to a Tough Mudder, Spartan Run, or Warrior Dash but executed on a team level. The Raider events are held outdoors in state parks or large wooded areas. Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, known simply as JROTC, isn’t a formal military organization. It is a citizenship program designed to teach leadership, confidence, appreciation for community service, and other qualities that will help young people succeed in whatever they do after high school.

MMA is proud that our Raiders Team collaborates with the other schools to build a team to compete in events. MMA’s JROTC is an Honor Unit with Distinction. As such, MMA can nominate qualified candidates to the United States Service Academies. MMA hosts one of only four Summer JROTC programs in the country approved by US Army Cadet Command.

If your student would like to partake in JROTC, then MMA is the right place for them. Contact our admissions team today to apply through our rolling admissions process.
