Cadets in Colonels Camp have been busy with field trips, friendship making, classroom time, and so much more! Colonels Camp is part of the Summer STAR programs that Massanutten offer for grades 5-8. The program is 5-weeks camp designed to teach middle school students leadership and focus on values like Character, Leadership, Responsibility, and Service. Campers will learn of U.S. history, military history, close order drill and military customs and courtesies through activities, field trips and discussion. There are field trips during the week to support what is learned in the classroom and have some summer fun at the same time!
Below is a list of a few of the field trips that cadets have had the opportunity to take:
- Harpers Ferry National Park in West Virginia. The campers learned about John Brown’s Raid and the role of Robert E. Lee in Brown’s capture.
- Dulles Air & Space Museum. The campers saw displays of aircraft from the beginning of flight to the present day.
- Arlington National Cemetery. The campers participated in a Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns.
- Woodstock Pool. The cadets enjoyed the afternoon cooling off and playing games at the pool!
On classroom days the campers study for their cadet testing, learn leadership, build friendships and have fun! Campers visit the Hayes Activity Center on campus to play board games, pool, foosball, ping-pong, and enjoy social time with their friends. The campers have especially enjoyed playing basketball and freeze tag in Memorial Gymnasium.
