The Cadet Corps needs your help!

Please support Academy programs through Annual Giving!

What is “Annual Giving”?

Annual Giving is the Academy’s primary source of revenue other than tuition.

Gifts (to the “Annual Fund”) help enhance programs, maintain facilities, and keep tuition in check.  Parents are often surprised to learn that their tuition payments do not cover the full cost of boarding school education.  It’s true.  MMA, like most schools, cannot charge tuition at rates high enough to pay the full expense of running the Academy.  Most parents simply would not be able to afford that sort of price tag.

Instead, we rely on generous, tax-deductible donations from our MMA family—alumni, friends, parents of both current and former cadets—who believe in the Academy’s mission and traditions, who want today’s cadets to enjoy outstanding educational opportunities, who want to see MMA continue to thrive.  Thanks to their faithful support, our enrollment remains strong.  Over half of the current Cadet Corps receives some form of financial aid based on their parents’ proven need.  Annual Giving makes that sort of life-changing assistance possible.  Donations also help us avoid budget reductions that would diminish the Academy’s most valued resource: its dedicated instructors, mentors, and school leaders.

Annual Giving’s Participation’s Importance to Other Fund-Raising Efforts: The MMA family’s collective generosity proves important when we solicit support from prospective benefactors and charitable foundations, who often ask what percentage of our alumni, parents, and trustees participate in Annual Giving.  The Academy family’s support through Annual Giving shows how much we all truly believe in our school’s mission and in the work we share together here in young peoples’ lives.

How are Annual Giving funds allocated?

Donors may designate their gifts for specific funds or programs (below), or they may offer unrestricted support for current operations.

Financial Aid – to provide merit scholarships as well as need-based tuition assistance

MMA Mentors – to bolster faculty/staff salaries and to reward excellence

Building Enhancement Fund – to help with upgrades of dormitories and classroom buildings

MMA Music – to enhance the Academy’s band and chorus programs

Colonels Athletics – to fund sports facilities and equipment as well as coaches’ stipends

Cadet Life – to supplement weekend activities and special (fun) events on and off campus

Are Annual Giving donations used for long-term projects or for construction of new facilities?

No.  The Academy’s Board of Trustees plans for future growth and major improvements, such as renovations of dormitories and class buildings, as well as new additions—library, media and performing arts centers.  Donations solicited through Capital Campaigns build for the future.  Annual Giving supports cadet programs today.

How can I contribute?

Donations may be by cash, check, credit card, pledge, or donation of stock or other negotiable assets.  Many employers will match such charitable donations, so please be sure to inquire where you work.   Gifts are often made in memory of loved ones or in honor of a respected faculty member or fellow alumnus.  The Academy’s Advancement Office collects and records all gifts and provides donors with documentation for their tax records.  A convenient, simple way to give is via the MMA website at http://www.militaryschool.com/page.cfm?p=306.

How large is a typical Annual Fund gift?

While contributions of $500 or more are fairly standard, gifts of any size are appreciated.   Our goal for 2009-10 is to raise $100,000 by April 1.  Donors’ names are listed in published annual reports by levels of giving (up to $250, $500, $1000, $2500, $5000 and $10,000+).
