Middle School Information

Grades 7-8

Student-Teacher Ratio: 10:1

Course Offerings

The MMA Middle School Program develops academic knowledge and skills important for the cadet's success in high school and college.  Of equal importance, the middle school program strives to nurture qualities of strong character and self-confidence.  Starting with the 2010-2011 school year, MMA middle school cadets will enjoy an exciting new program addition, as well: the Middle School Leadership Initiative

In addition to the four core subjects of learning, cadets also study health and develop their physical education skills.  Seventh and eighth-grade cadet schedules include another new program component, the Middle School Enrichment Program.  This work encompasses art and foreign language study.  Art experiences focus on both music and the fine arts.  Middle schoolers are also introduced to several languages, including Latin, Spanish, French, and German.

MMA's unique blend of traditional learning with leadership education, arts enrichment, and world languages and cultures presents a seminal reason why the MMA Middle School Program truly works to develop the global leaders of tomorrow.

Both male and female middle school cadets are attached to Headquarters Company, thus they receive added support of peer role models.  Males reside in Benchoff and Harrison Dormitories, with fellow male cadets of the Headquarters Staff.  Female middle school cadets reside on the second floor of Warehime Dormitory, the all-female living quarters area.

Members of the Commandant Staff also reside on these hallways.  These specially-selected members of the Academy team provide not only adult supervision but also general residence life support and strong mentorship.

Middle School Leadership Initiative

All cadets are leaders.  It’s only a matter of where each individual is on his or her personal journey to leadership development.  The goal of the Middle School Leadership Initiative (MSLI) is to teach seventh and eighth grade cadets how to think like leaders while developing young citizens who are confident, capable, and community-minded.

Many people think that middle school students are too young for leadership, focusing entirely on teaching students in this age group how to be good followers. While it’s true that good leaders must also be good followers, the MSLI is founded on the idea that seventh and eighth grade cadets are capable of leading their peers, as well as themselves.

The Middle School Leadership Initiative engenders a culture of youth leadership.  In the MSLI, cadets learn not to expect down-directional philosophies of leadership, for the journey of true leadership begins with self-knowledge, discipline, and the confidence to support and inspire peers.
