Rosetta Stone® Introduced
in Foreign Language Classes
posted 27 September 2007
When
the student body returned to classes this year, they noticed
computers in their foreign language classrooms. Ms. Hammond, the
Academic Dean, and her staff were hard at work this summer to
increase options for all students, particularly by adding a Russian
course.
In addition to expanding the foreign language options, the
President, Dean, and foreign language teachers met with a sales
representative from Rosetta Stone®,
one of the leading language software companies in the world. The
demonstration proved to incorporate the repetition with different
styles and variations needed in learning a new language. The new
software also provides native speakers for students to hear, color
pictures and images to associate with words and actions, and a
speaking section to help gauge how close the student is compared to
a native or fluent speaker. The students enjoy using
the computers and software; it is rumored that students will work
several minutes into their 10-minute break period to work on their
Rosetta Stone® lesson!
Currently, 25 computers are used in the foreign language classrooms
and the other computers in the library and labs will have the
software added this week. Overall, the new software has proven to
be a great augmentation to traditional language classes because it
provides immediate feedback and offers new styles of learning for
students. For more information on the software, please contact the
Director of IT, Matthew Klus at (540)459-2167 ext. 286 or at

posted 24 September 2007
ATTENTION
PARENTS!!
We are requesting your help in creating the senior
cadet's yearbook pages. The following are the guidelines for
your cadet’s senior page in the 2007-2008 yearbook. Most of theses
items will be collected in your child’s english class. However, we
would appreciate your help in locating the needed pictures. Also,
you may want to give some advice to your child as to what he or she
might want to include on their page . We need the follwing:
- 4 pictures of your choice with one of them being a baby picture.
NOTE: Pictures cannot contain anything that
would be considered unsuitable by the academy
-
A quote
-
A senior will. Ex: “I will my…”
-
A shout out to friends, family, role models, etc…
-
Major accomplishments in high school. Ex: awards, sports, etc…
The pictures must be turned in
by December 3 or your child will not have a senior page. You
can have your cadet turn them into the yearbook staff or mail/e-mail
them directly to the following address:
Ms. Kim Petersen
Massanutten Military Academy

Sports Update from the Athletic Director
posted 20 September 2007
Yesterday
the Soccer team continued to roll as they beat Virginia School
for the Deaf 8 – 0 improving their official season record to 3 –
0. Can any one think of the last time MMA’s Soccer Team started
the season at 3 – 0? I know in the 4 years I have been here I
can not. Keep an eye on this team as they move on with great
hopes of a truly great season. Their next game will be on
Thursday 20 Sept again at home vs. Shenandoah Valley Academy.
The Volleyball team played a double header yesterday winning the
first game 2 – 0, and losing a very hard fought and close second
game 2 -1, moving their
official season record to 2 – 2.
The Cross Country Team has not opened its Fall Season as of yet,
they do so next week with high hope and also the largest Cross
Country Team MMA has seen in its running history, as for the
first time under Head Coach Dave Strong, we will field a FULL
Girls Team in Competition.
The Rifle Team has also not opened its Fall shooting season as
of yet but will do so on Thursday 20 Sept with a Road Trip to
FUMA.
The Raiders have begun competition and are once again looking
very strong this year.
The Drill Team has not competed as of yet but as always will do
MMA Proud in all competitions they attend.
The
Football Teams Season is under way as they have played 2
Official Games and also what is classified as an in season
scrimmage, The Official record of the Football Team is 2 – 0 and
its record with the Scrimmage is 2 – 1. One quick Stat on one of
the football players, Yannick Morgan Welch so far this season in
just 3 games has already Rushed for 481 yards on the season
setting a pace to break the single season rushing record here at
MMA which is currently held by Yannick Morgan Welch, set 2 years
ago with 1296 yards in one season. The Football Teams next game
is Friday night 21 Sept in Springfield Va against Word of Life
Academy.
Thanks again folks, as I know it
means a lot to the cadets here when they see you out at the
games cheering them on. Support all the Colonels Sports teams.
GO COLONELS!
-Coach Chiarolanzio (Athletic Director)

Football Rolls To Season Opening Win
posted 14 September 2007
MMA
Football rolled to a season opening win over Quantico with a final
score of 40 – 7. MMA took the field with one if its largest high
school football teams in years as 46 players stack the sidelines
this season.
Quantico stepped onto the field and showed they were ready to play
as they opened the scoring with in the first 5 minutes of the game
jumping out to an early 7 – 0 lead. The lead how ever was very short
lived as on the ensuing kick off, Marques Jordon returned the kick
off 75 yards for a touch down to tie the score at 7 – 7. After MMA
kicked off and the Defense buckled down, Norman Fields stepped in
front of a screen pass in the Quantico back field and returned it
all the way to make the score 14 – 7 MMA, a lead that would then
stand up for the rest of the game.

The MMA Defense again stepped up and shut down Quantico to give the
ball back to the MMA Offense who started to move down the field and
Marques Jordon took a QB option around the right side with key
blocks along the way took it all the way for another Touch Down but
the extra point failed raising MMA’s lead to 20 – 7.
On
the next MMA Drive QB Banks Gray hit Thomas Hazel on a crossing
pattern that he turned into a catch and run for another MMA Touch
Down, again the extra point failed giving MMA a 26 -7 lead. On MMA’s
last possession of the First Half, Yannick Morgan-Welch turned a
broken play (snap over the QB’s Head) into a touch down as he
scooped up the ball and ran around the right side and running over
the final 2 players into the end zone to give MMA a 32 – 7 half time
lead. In the second half, with all of MMA’s Players seeing a lot of
playing time, there was no scoring until the forth quarter when Evan
Woodfork took a sweep around the left end 70 yards for MMA’s Final
Score and a 2 point extra point to give MMA its final score of 40 –
7.

MMA Football looked good in the season opener, but still had several
first game mistakes that they need to over come. But the season is
off to a great start as the team sits at 1 – 0 and ready to take on
the Virginia Home School Team next week (8 September) in week 2 of
the season. Come on out and enjoy the fun and support the Colonels
at home at 2:00pm Saturday 15 September as they go for win number 3
on the season. |

MMA Boy Scout Troop Visits Oceana Air Show
posted 14 September 2007
MMA
Boy Scout Troop 1899 reunited for the first time this school year to
travel for the weekend to the Annual Oceana Air Show at Virginia
Beach.
After a long bus ride down to Naval Air Station
Oceana, the cadets were rewarded with several night-time fly-bys
with US Navy Jets and a closing fireworks display.
Boy
Scout Troop 1899 from MMA linked up with Troops 52 and 100 from
Front Royal and Luray to share meals, barracks space, and general
camaraderie.
Saturday was a full-day of air-show events starting with several
parachute teams and their acrobatic displays. The cadets were
able to roam freely around the Air Show Grounds inquiring
information from colleges, power tool companies, static plane
displays and (most exciting) entering simulation centers offered by
the different branches of the armed services.
The
crowd was also entertained by several old propeller type planes with
their spiraling acts to the newest and sleekest jets, the F-22
"Raptor" and the F-114 "Stealth" Bomber. The Air show
concluded with the grandest display of air acrobatics from the
famous
"Blue Angels." Their 45-minute show left the crowd with sore
necks and gasping mouths. The Boy Scouts concluded the evening
with an inter-troop "Ultimate Frisbee" match on the beach as the
