On Wednesday, October 10, Brock and Company, that prepares the food in Cook and Kitchin Dining Hall, sponsored a special lunch with Chef Eric Rappaport carving beef and turkey. On hand for the festivities were Chad Ramsey and Alex Fitzgerald from Tysons Foods (first and third from left in accompanying picture). Others in the picture are Brian Heiss, Chef Eric and Brock District Manager Larry Stelitano.  Cadet Fucella bounded to the front when his number was called for the drawing. Thank you Tysons for providing the bicycle.
Expanding Student Access to Computers    posted 12 October 2007

Parents and cadets know that MMA has a strict policy on personal computers on campus to help maintain our students’ focus on academics away from the classroom.  However, the main drawback to this policy is that students are limited in their access to computers.  In order to alleviate our students’ need for academic time on computers, the Academy procured 10 refurbished Dell desktops and installed them in the library.  Julie Meirose, the President’s Assistant, notified me of Computer Recycling of Virginia (CRVA) as a place to recycle our old computers, monitors, and peripherals.  CRVA is a valuable asset for businesses and individuals who would like to donate their used computer equipment as a tax credit.  It is even more valuable for non-profit agencies and schools to receive this refurbished equipment free of charge to lower operating expenses.  These refurbished desktops may not provide business the speed and requirements necessary to run robust software programs, but for a student researching information on-line or typing a paper, these systems are more than sufficient.  In addition to providing refurbished systems to non-profit agencies and schools, CRVA has a zero-landfill policy for all turned-in computer equipment.  The academy plans to request more desktops and laptops from this program to help introduce more computers to students on their dorm floors.  For more information visit their website at www.recycle4va.org or contact the Director of IT, Matthew Klus at (540)459-2167 ext. 286 or at mklus@militaryschool.com

Cross Country 1st and 2nd at Final Home Meet of the Season posted 12 October 2007

Yesterday’s Meet went very well for MMA.  The boys ran a good race and are in 2nd Place in the conference pending results from Blue Ridge.  The boys are at worst tied for 2nd.  Stafford Melerine (a 10th Grader) is 1 minute away from the JV Boys Record.

The girls scored the first head-to-head win in MMA History.  Team Captain Melissa Sinar (an 11th Grader) was the overall winner of the girl’s race and is 53 seconds away from the Girl’s Varsity Cross Country Record.

The team’s thanks goes out to all the MMA Faculty and Staff for supporting the Team.  We send a special thanks to 1SG Ansbro and the Master Fitness Team for their support and help at our Home Meets.  We also send a very special thank-you to SFC Kurtz and the Raiders for helping the Cross Country Teams this season.

Fall Sports Update from the Athletic Director
posted 01 October 2007

Good Day folks well its time for a mid season or so update on our current sports teams playing this Fall at MMA.

This has to be one of the finest Fall Season’s we have had here at MMA across the board for all of our teams, not just in the win loss column, but the show of class, good sportsmanship and the way our kids are representing the academy every time they compete. This not only goes to just the kids but also our coaches across the board, they put in a lot of hours and hard work and dedication to our kids to make all this happen. If you see one of our Fall Coaches make sure to let them know what a great job they do for The Athletic Department and MMA as a whole. It is such a pleasure to have a phone conversation with the head of the Soccer Officials Association, who has been calling Soccer Games here at MMA for going on 12 years now, and to have him tell me that this team, is the most fundamentally sound team he has EVER seen at MMA, and that they play with heart every game, and are a true class act when they step on the field. Now I don’t just get it from him but just about every official in soccer this season has commented how enjoyable it has been so far to call games here and see how our team has improved and come to were we are now.

Lets continue with Soccer, Soccer is off to a 4 – 2 Record and playing some great soccer. Currently they are tied for 2nd place in the CAC and playing the best soccer we have played in years. Key wins so far this year over Fishburne Military School, not once but two times, first time at Fishburne winning 5 – 3, then beating Fishburne again here on our field in a great game 2 – 1. They have suffered one conference loss so far and that was in a great game against SVA which ended 2-1. Keep up the great work and folks come out and support the Soccer team for its home games, you will be treated to some outstanding MMA Soccer.

Ok moving along to the Rifle Team, this season has been tough on them as many of the top shooters from last year are no longer  here at MMA but they are working hard and practicing hard to improve every day and are led so far by Cadet R.Carlisle who is the team's top shooter. Keep up the hard work.

Volleyball this season is playing a tougher schedule due to a realignment of the CAC, and has represented the school very well as they play hard every game and have lost a few tough matches, and also pulled out a few tough ones. The season for them still has a ways to go and we all know that they will pull together and make us all proud as they always do. The team is currently led by Cadet C. McCullough who is the team captain and stats leader. Come out and cheer on the girls when they play at home.

Cross Country, ok folks this one is extremely special, so far this year this team has just lit the courses on fire setting record after record, and topping school records, not just for this year, but in the History of MMA Cross Country, The Boys Cross Country Currently sits with a record of 5 – 1, They finished  in 2nd place in the last meet that had 7 Teams there, but here is the kicker so to say, they finished TIED for 1st and lost on a tie breaker, The Girls Cross Country Team, yes I did type 'Girls Cross Country Team' is currently sitting with a record of 4-2, The Girls on the cross country team have now become the FIRST GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY TEAM in MMA HISTORY to WIN a meet, ladies our hats off to all of you. This is Truly an outstanding effort and you make the school proud in your actions, Keep up the great work.

Now as I said before about the Coaches, if you all see Coach Dave Strong walking the halls of MMA or if not there see him out running some where in the Valley, make sure to congratulate him  as his win the other day in the cross country meet was his 50th career win here at MMA. Congrats Coach Strong, awesome achievement.

And lastly the Football team, The football team are the ones walking the halls this week looking like the walking wounded, they suffered a very tough loss this past week to a very strong Maryland School for the Deaf Team, MSD has only lost 1 game in the past 3 years and are a very strong team. On the up side, our boys did a great job and showed some true class and character on the field this weekend. The game got very tough and at times seemed to be getting out of control to the point of some one getting hurt, Trailing 44-6 at the half the MMA football team could have folded and just quit but they kept on going hard and came back scoring 26 points in the second half and losing the game by a final score of 59-32. With that loss the football team drops from #4 to #5 in the state rankings but just a 0.05 points out of 4th with a string of games coming in the next few weeks that can vault them back into the state play off rankings with in the top 4 spots. This week being key as they play Roanoke Catholic on Friday Night, this is the team MMA is currently tied with for the #5 spot in the rankings (see rankings below). MMA has lost some very tough games to Roanoke in the past 4 year and has come out on the short end every year. So lets cheer on the team to break that sting and beat Roanoke This week.

Again folks lets get out  there and support our teams, they are doing OUTSTANDING and only getting better. Be part of the movement to put MMA Sports on the Map.

GO COLONELS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
