BSA Troop 1899 (MMA) places 3rd in Cooking Competition posted 6 November 2007

The MMA Boy Scout Troop 1899 traveled to Camp Rock Enon in Northwest Virginia over the weekend to compete against other troops in a round-robin style cooking competition. More than 20 troops traveled from Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland to take part in the competition and camping event.  Camp Rock Enon is owned and operated by the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) and has over 500 acres of forest, ponds, trails, and cabins for scouts to enjoy.

The competition consisted of 8 different "cooking" stations ranging from cooking fresh fish over charcoal, to cooking biscuits in a reflector oven, to cooking a dessert dish in a dutch oven.  MMA Troop 1899 captured 3rd overall place, but maxed points in the mystery ingredient meal and the obstacle course/quickest to boil an egg events.  Even Scoutmaster, Joe Babcock, captured 1st place with his homemade doughnuts in the Scoutmaster Dessert competition.  The Troop camped Friday and Saturday evenings and endured some cold temperatures but enjoyed some camaraderie, competition, and success!

Homecoming 2007, a Great Success!
posted 1 November 2007

Homecoming 2007 was a huge success.  More than 460 participants-alumni, parents and friends graced our campus in celebration of MMA’s 108th Homecoming event.  Starting with Friday at our annual Tommy Johnson Golf Tournament, the gentlemen from the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars lead by Frank Painter, Class of 1963 won 1st place.  Frank also provided the 2008 Jeep Liberty 4x4 from Edinburg Motors that we chose as our Hole-in-One prize.  Unfortunately, we did not have a winner, but we sure had some come close.  This year the tournament raised approximately $6500 in scholarship funds for the Tommy Johnson Scholarship and we hope to be able to have another tournament in the spring of 2008.  Thanks again to all of our participants and our sponsors.  Saturday’s events started with a Homecoming Parade, Tailgate BBQ and our great defeat over Fishburne as MMA won the football game 53-34 and took home the Saber Football Cup.  Our Alumni Banquet and Champagne Brunch were held in the Cook & Kitchin Dining Hall and the after reunion parties went on through the rest of the weekend.  It was great to see everyone and lots of new faces this year.  We hope that you will always come home for this alumni weekend.

For a full rendition of the entire weekend events, just take a look at all of the magnificent photos shot by Randolph & Catherine Carlisle in our photo gallery page.

Cross Country Girls Capture 1st Conference Championship posted 1 November 2007

The Cross Country Teams have worked very hard this season.  The Boys overcame several setbacks due to tours and grades to have the best overall record for the past 10 years.  The highlight of the CAC Championship at Blue Ridge was Team Captain Nate Harvey making the All Conference Team for the second year and he is ranked 7th overall in the CAC.  The course and the competition were the hardest the boys faced all season.  They all ran well and never gave up despite finishing in 5th Place.

The Girls brought home the first Cross Country Conference Championship in MMA history.  The ladies were lead by Team Captain Melissa Sinar all the way to the gold.  As if that wasn’t enough; all members of the Girls’ Team made the All Conference Team!  Cindy Camire ran well despite an ankle injury supported by team-mate Song Kim.  Anna Almekinders showed the most determination and pushed herself to finish in her best position this season.  The final overall CAC individual rankings for the Girls’ are: Melissa Sinar 2nd, Audrey Fowler 3rd, Anna Almekinders 4th, Alexis Greenwood 5th, Cindy Camire 6th, and Song Eun Kim 7th.

Both Teams will travel to the State Meet at Woodberry Forest School on November 9th
