Mapping the Journey Ahead:
Cadets Plan Future Coursework, College Decisions posted
19 May 2008
On Saturday, May 17th cadets attended the MMA Spring
Academic Planning Day. The day’s events provided an intense follow
up to the Fall Academic Planning Day that was held on Saturday,
September 1st. Cadets again took the Kuhlman-Anderson standardized
test. The main goal of the activity is to see how much the cadets
have improved their math and English skills over the course of the
academic year.
Following the test, cadets in grades seven through eleven reviewed
their academic roadmaps with their mentors. Parents received the
roadmaps electronically during spring break.
While underclassmen met with their mentors, seniors participated in
a graduation and college review session. In addition to preparing
for the year’s closing events, seniors learned about key financial,
social, and academic decisions that they will need to make during
their college years.

MMA ESL Students Excel on Language Test posted
19 May 2008
During the Spring Academic Planning Day, MMA’s ESL
students focused on taking the SLEP test rather than the
Kuhlman-Anderson test. The Secondary Level English Proficiency
(SLEP®) test measures nonnative speakers' listening and reading
comprehension abilities. Our ESL students took the exam at the
beginning of the school year and at the mid-term point of the year,
as well.
While scores showed great improvement in January, they showed even
greater proficiency in the weekend testing. September scores ranged
from 8% to 65%; whereas, the May 17th scores ranged from 77% to 94%
proficiency. ESL Instructor, Mrs. TL Garrison, applauded her cadets’
success: “They’ve been working so hard. I’m very proud of them!”

MMA Girls Softball Team
2008 Cavalier
Athletic Conference
CHAMPIONS!!! posted
9 May 2008
Congratulations
to the 2008 MMA Girls Softball Team on their 11-8 Win over
the Number 1 seeded and defending conference champions Mt.
View!!! The Softball team lost to Mt. View early in the
regular season, but showing their determination they proved
themselves champions Thursday. Our hats off to you for
a job well done, you worked hard and you all earned it.
On the other side the Boys
Baseball team fell to SVA in a very good ball game, 7-0, A
game that was 1-0 until the 4th inning
and could have gone either way. The boys did MMA Proud and
showed a lot of class. For the members of the team that were
here last year it was tough losing in the championship 2
years in a row. Good Job.
Make sure if you see any of
these players both the boys and the girls give them a pat on
the back for doing MMA sports proud once again, taking the
field in the purple and gold of MMA and doing it with class
and outstanding sportsmanship.
Great Job
Rich

CAC Cup Track report: 5 School Records
posted 7 May 2008
The Track Teams traveled to Benedictine School for the CAC Cup.
Despite some strong showings, the Boys fell to superior numbers.
Several school records were broken by the younger runners. Logan
Reed broke his own 1600 Meter Middle School Boys record by 9 seconds
clocking an impressive 5:42. Reed finished the night with a Middle
School Boys 3200 Meter record of 13:30. Farrell Keough broke his JV
Boys Shot Put record by nearly 3 feet with a throw of 33 feet 8
inches. Keough scored 2 points with a 3rd place finish in the Long
Jump. Jeffery Fowler scored 2 points and ran a near-record 3rd place
in the 1600 Meters in 5:17-2 seconds off the JV Boys record. Breon
Makonnen finished the 800 Meter run in 2:43 for 4th place and 1
point.
Geon Kim broke the Middle School Boys 200 Meter record by nearly a
second with a time of 28.6 seconds. The surprise of the night was
Hunter Babcock’s record 800 Meter Run. Babcock clocked a 2:11 split
during the 3200 Meters paced by team-mate Logan Reed. Due to a
missed call earlier in the 800 Meters, Babcock was awarded the
record during the longer race.

Teams scored as follows:
1st Benedictine 80
2nd Blue Ridge 79
3rd MMA 5
Overall Record:
Boys 1-1-8
Girls 1-6
