Boy Scouts Travel to
Annapolis and Earn Merit Badges from Midshipmen
posted 24 January 2008
Troop 1899 traveled last weekend to Annapolis, MD to
train in merit badge skills and tour the campus of the Naval Academy. The
troop traveled through Hagerstown, MD and linked up with 2 other troops before
closing in on Camp Letts (YMCA Camp) just outside of Annapolis late
Friday night. The troops rose early Saturday morning and were
greeted by many eagle scouts who are currently midshipmen at the
academy. The troop witnessed a flag raising ceremony very
similar to our own at MMA. The rest
of the morning consisted of information and recruitment briefs from midshipmen
and faculty on the school and life at the Naval Academy.
The scouts were treated to meals in
the midshipmen's new mess hall, a quite
large and impressive facility. After lunch, the scouts were given a tour of the
campus before breaking off into their merit badge groups for 3 hours of
training. Scouts Babcock and Reid from MMA Troop 1899 received training in
aviation, while Scouts Potter and Dugan received training in
chemistry and electricity, respectively.
After a long day, the troop retired back to Camp Letts. The
troop avoided the bitter cold temperatures by sleeping in bunkhouse
style cabins at the YMCA Camp. The troop arose early Sunday to
share brunch with the fellow troops from Maryland and returned to
campus by noon on Sunday to allow ample time for studying and
preparation for exams this week.
