Basketball Team Shoots for CAC Championships posted 21 December 2007

The MMA Basketball Program is off to a great start. The Varsity team is 2-3 in VISAA Division 3 play. After an opening scrimmage loss to the Front Royal Red Storm, the team rallied off two straight 30 point wins over CAC/DAC Opponents Mt. View and Wakefield Country Day. The team is led by Captains Marquis Jordan and Fabrice Lohier. The Colonels faced adversity the following weekend but played admirably at the Caissons Classic Military Tournament at Fishburne Military School. While there the Colonels lost to Fork Union Military Academy and Randolph Macon Academy by 12 in a game that was much closer throughout. The following Monday, MMA welcomed SVA for their home opener. Still without a full team, the Colonels played great basketball and walked away with just a one point loss. The Colonels Varsity team returns to full strength after the break and welcomes Wakefield School to MMA on January 4th. Wakefield is currently ranked 8th in the state in VISAA Division 3. The game is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Let's get everyone out to Bowman Gym to support your Colonels as they look to unseat the Owls and move towards a Cavalier Athletic Conference Championship!

The Junior Varsity is also off to a great 3-0 start, continuing upon their dominance from last year. After sweeping at home with VASDB, the JV Colonels hit full stride against the Front Royal Flames, winning by a score of 39-20. The team has only not lost a lead in one of 12 quarters this season and is starting to realize it's full potential. Led by team Captains Kamil Shahadat and Kyle Holloway, the team is working together to put another winning season on the board. In case you weren't at the last game, Cadet McDaniel's last second half court shot was one that should not have been missed. This is the type of excitement you can expect when the JV Colonels return to action at home on January 11th versus Wakefield School.

Thanks for all your support as we hit the homestretch of an exciting basketball season!

First Quarter Gold Eagle Awardees
posted 12 December 2007

Academics is becoming even more rigorous at MMA. Eight cadets were named to the President’s List for academic achievement. Winners may wear gold eagles on the uniform. Cadets earning the gold eagle are: Joshua Avni, Brittany Crocker, Aleksandra Janhunen; H.J. Lee; Timothy Mays; Caileigh McCulloch; Zachary Mufson; and Melissa Sinar. Only 4% of our corps achieved this honor. To earn a gold eagle, cadets must hold a 3.8 or higher GPA on the four-point scale. Also, no grade may be lower than an A–.
In addition, there were 36 Dean’s List awardees who are entitled to wear the silver eagle; and 46 Proficient Cadets who may wear the bronze eagle. Dean’s List cadets must have a GPA of 3.4 or higher with no grade below a B–. Proficient Cadets must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher with no grade below a C–.
Grades are cumulative for the year and awards are based on standing at the end of each quarter.

The Upshot of Physics posted 12 December 2007

After studying the basics of projectile motion in Mr. Nett’s physics class,
students recently set about constructing and testing their own projectile launchers. After selecting parts from a variety of hardware supplies, the students worked in teams, aiming to engineer the most accurate, consistent machine. Each team approached the objective with a unique design, but they all investigated the key ideas of force and elasticity as they developed their launchers, fired table tennis balls or perforated plastic balls through the air, and charted their trajectories. As their final challenge, the students competed in an accuracy contest, setting their sights on the bull’s-eye of a metal pie tin. All the teams performed well, often hearing the satisfying ping of hitting their target, and knowing they’d engineered a success.
