Spring Sports Closing Strong posted 26 April 2007

On Tuesday, 24th of April, the baseball team swept the doubleheader with Mt. View to clinch home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.  Behind the big bat of Cadet Hedges, the base-running of Cadet Crowder, and the strong arms of Cadet Geraghty and Cadet Hendricks, The Colonels will be playing in their backyard for the rest of the playoffs.
During the first game, Crowder stretched a double into a triple and eventually scored early for the Colonels.  Geraghty pitched a solid game allowing very few runners on base and Hedges put it out of reach with a late solo-homerun, deep over the centerfield net.  The CAC semi-finals will be played on Monday, April 30th and the finals on Thursday, May 3rd.

The MMA Drill team traveled to Front Royal last week for a drill competition at Randolph-Macon Academy.
Led by Cadets Backman, Cooper, and Poe the team won three trophies.  They took 1st place in the Challenge Level Color Guard, 2nd Place in the Inspection category, and 3rd Place in Armed Platoon Drill.  There were 12 teams in the competition, and MMA did extremely well, considering the team has mostly new members.  The Academy is extremely proud of the Drill Team, especially in the way in which they conducted themselves and represented the school and Corps of Cadets.

Spring Sports in Full Swing updated 04 April 2007

It's early in the season but the Colonels are 3-0 for the first time in the history of the lacrosse program. MMA is currently ranked 22nd out of 126 public and private school teams in Virginia by the U.S. Lacrosse Federation site Laxpower.com, including a VISSA Division III state ranking of 4th. Outfitted in their trademark solid gold uniforms, the Colonels are led by the career leading scorer at MMA, Senior Attackman Mike Walter (Chantilly, VA), Midfielders Senior Kyle Yen (McLean, VA), Junior Banks Gray (Richmond, VA), and Junior Franck Tchatchouang (Potomac, MD). The defense led by Seniors Steve Fiakowski (Highland, NY) and John Thieberger (Springfield, VA).

The Colonels most recently defeated their long time sports rival Fishburne Military Academy 14-5 at Bowman Stadium in a very physical contest. The Colonels look to continue their winning ways against Guardian Angel Regional Catholic School from Stanuton, VA later this week.

The boys track team started strong this season with a 4th place finish in the Eastern Mennonite High School Invitational.  Although MMA did not have any first place finishers, they are consistently strong in most events. This consistency placed them ahead of rival Roanoke Catholic H.S. and just 1 point behind Fauquier School and 2 points behind 2nd place EMHS.

Cadet Sinar, for the girls track team, is quick in placing her name in the MMA record books.  She broke 2 records in the first meet at Luray H.S.  Cadet Sinar ran the 800 meter in 3:00 and the 1600 meter in 6:32.  She wasn't done there, last night at the EMHS meet she broke her recently set record in the 1600 meter by 8 seconds coming in at 6:24.  Congratulations to both the girls and the boys track teams for a good start!

Girls Softball had their season opener on the road to Mt. View Christian Academy in Stephen’s City on March 27th.  Anna Hedges started off quite well pitching and also had 2 RBI’s in the 4th inning.  Caleigh McCulloch rounded out our last score bringing in Mo-Mo Catlett late in the 4th.  Unfortunately, the Lady Colonels were beaten 14-3.

The Lady Colonels will have their home opener on Saturday, March 31st at 12:00 p.m. on the MMA Softball field against Modell.  Starting on the mound for Saturday will be Caleigh McCulloch.  Come out and see us!  Parents, friends, alumni are all invited and encouraged to come out and support our athletic teams.
