Preparing Today's Teenagers to Be Tomorrow's Leaders

JROTC Shoulder Patch Army JROTC Program

Entrance to Sperry Hall's JROTC classrooms and offices.

The Army Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) at Massanutten is designated as an Honor Unit with Distinction, currently held by less than 9 percent of the 1600 JROTC units in the country. The mission of JROTC is to motivate each cadet to be a better citizen. JROTC’s objectives include having each cadet develop an appreciation of the ethical values and principles that underlie good citizenship, including integrity, acceptance of responsibility and a respect for constituted authority. JROTC cadets are under no obligation to enter the military.

The JROTC program requires 180 hours of instruction each year covering a broad spectrum of subjects, including leadership skills, American history, the Constitution, technology awareness, first aid, physical conditioning, and drill and ceremony. A weekly leadership laboratory is conducted where cadets are placed in leadership positions and have the chance to put their leadership training to practical use. Extracurricular JROTC activities include the drill team and Raider team. At MMA (the only school in the nation to offer it), one or more years of JROTC are available during its summer session.

Honor Unit With Distincetion

The completion of one or more years of JROTC may provide cadets with college level ROTC credit. MMA carries the Honor Unit with Distinction designation, which will help selected, qualified cadets with obtaining nominations to West Point, the Naval Academy, or the Air Force Academy and assistance with ROTC scholarships to major universities. Cadets who complete three or more years of JROTC and who choose to enlist in the U.S. Army may receive immediate promotion.
