How does my son join Scouting at MMA and what does it
cost?
Boys may join Boy Scouts for an annual membership fee of $12
at any time during the academic year at MMA. This fee goes
to the Boy Scouts of America entitling your son to all
rights and privileges of membership. Scouting trips
throughout the year may vary in cost but are kept to an
absolute minimum to encourage participation. All new Scouts
must purchase a Scout Handbook which is approximately $9
including shipping and handling. Dues are $100 per year.
Can my son transfer his Scout membership from his
hometown troop to MMA?
Yes, as long as he presents a current BSA membership card.
Dual membership with MMA Troop 1899 and his former troop can
be completed for $1.
If my son earned rank and merit badges from his home town
troop can these achievements be transferred to the troop at
MMA?
Yes! We ask that if a boy is joining from a hometown troop
to bring or mail a copy of his Scout records, “blue cards”
indicating advancements dates, merit badges, awards. These
achievements will be incorporated into his Scout record at
MMA. If records are not available, documentation from
previous Scoutmaster or council in the form of a letter will
be acceptable. Scouts are also asked to bring Scout
Handbooks from home if they have them.
Does my son need to purchase a Scout uniform?
No! All Scouting activities are conducted utilizing the
clothing in the MMA uniform issue. Some boys bring Scout
uniforms from their home troop and are allowed to wear them
on outings, courts of honor and other special events. Some
boys buy a Scout uniform voluntarily; however, there is no
pressure from the Academy to purchase Scout uniforms because
of the limited amount of space in the barracks rooms and
closets. Rank badges may be worn on the uniform.
What does my son need to do in order to advance in
scouting at Massanutten?
The main part to advancement in Scouting at Massanutten is
to attend weekly meetings on Wednesday nights at 6:30 P.M.
and take part in the weekend activities which are held at
least once a month.
Will Scouting interfere with my son’s studies?
The Scouting program at Massanutten is so it does not
interfere with the Scouts, studies. Academics are always
first at Massanutten. Scouts are allowed to eat early on
Mondays at 6:00 P.M. so they can attend the Scout meeting at
6:30. The meeting will end at 7:45 so that the cadet can
make it back to his room for study hall.
Will my son be able to complete Eagle Scout while at
Massanutten?
Yes! The opportunity is available at Massanutten to complete
all advancement requirements to the rank of Eagle to include
Eagle required merit badges. The normal time required for a
new Scout to complete Eagle is approximately 4 years.
Completion of Eagle depends on the degree of motivation of
each individual boy. Some boys take longer than others. All
requirements for Eagle must be completed before the boy
turns 18.
Can my son complete Eagle Projects while at Massanutten?
Yes, several boys have completed projects on the Massanutten
campus. Boys must be highly motivated and persistent in
order to complete their Eagle project.
What is the key to success for my son as a Scout at
Massanutten?
Stay off academic/disciplinary restrictions. Consistently
attend meetings and participation in weekend outings are the
best opportunities for advancement. The opportunity for
merit badge completion and advancement exists at Massanutten
for those Scouts who are motivated.
