Scuba - New Course Offering in 2007
In an effort to provide new and exciting
educational and recreational experiences, Massanutten Military
Academy will be offering Scuba classes taught by professional
instructors from Kathy’s Scuba, Inc. Scuba diving is a
non-competitive recreational activity that can be enjoyed throughout
one’s lifetime, and opens doors to fields of study such as marine
biology, underwater archeology and research.
Students
must be in good health and at least 15 years of age and have
parental consent to enroll in the course. The class is a PADI* Open
Water Scuba course. This course will prepare the student for
certification as an open water diver. The class is divided into 3
parts:
Classroom – where you learn about equipment, technique, and
proper procedures for safe diving.
Pool – using the equipment you
practice the techniques and skills discussed in the classroom. Here
you will gain confidence in your ability to safely use the
equipment.
Open Water Dives – the student will
participate in 4 open water dives with a professional instructor at
a local dive site or the dives can be completed with another PADI
instructor on a referral basis in some tropical location. The same
skills that are learned in the pool are practiced in open water for
certification.
Upon completion of the open water dives the
students (15 – 18 years of age) will be awarded a PADI Open Water
certification card. This is a non-expiring card.
Cost for the classroom and pool portion of
the course is $250. This includes the textbook, logbook, dive
tables, pool fees, instructor fees, and rental fees for the scuba
equipment.
Personal snorkeling equipment (mask, snorkel,
boots, & fins) is not included but an equipment package is available
to the students from Kathy’s Scuba. (Description on attached page)
Cost for the certification dives is $150 (all
4 dives when done locally).
