Why postgrad?

The postgraduate program at Massanutten Military Academy is designed to allow young men an opportunity to prepare for success in college as a student-athlete. It enhances scholastic ability, primarily in English and mathematics, and aids in improving college entrance exam scores; allows each player to earn up to 9 credit hours (cannot exceed 11 hours without losing collegiate eligibility but all courses are 3-hour courses); and develop true leadership skills.

The program is open to young men who desire individualized and personal attention in the classroom and on the court. The goal of the postgraduate program is not just to ensure that the postgraduates are “attractive” to the college of their choice, but that they are prepared for academic success at that college. The program also is designed to help students who are preparing for admittance in one of the service academies.

Postgraduate students may opt to enroll in one of the dual-credit courses offered through Lord Fairfax Community College or Shenandoah University or may enroll in the College Success Program and maintain a full four years of collegiate eligibility.

The program provides a safe, structured environment for a young person to develop independence during a transitional or “gap” year before college.

Campus Life

Postgraduate cadets are integrated into the Corps of Cadets for dorm life, although their athletic teams compete separately and most classes are exclusive to the PG program. Life in the Corps provides the military structure that will help them learn or improve their leadership ability, self-confidence, organizational skills, and independence.

The rural location and supervised living quarters provide a less distracting environment than a freshman year of college. Therefore, the postgraduate student learns self-discipline, effective study habits, and time management skills.
