Testimonials
"I am very proud to write that my son, Patrick,
has successfully completed the summer leadership
program. He received an A in his 9th grade World
History class and was de-napped and promoted to
sergeant. In reviewing the work from Mr. Burr's
class and I was very impressed with the insights
that Mr. Burr made in his review of Patrick's class
work. Patrick seems to have taken something to heart
and improved the quality of his work, something he
had not done during the previous three years at
Fairfax County schools. I am most grateful that this
wonderful teacher took the time and energy to give
Patrick the kind of attention he needed. I also
appreciated the phone calls to update me on his
progress and review any background information that
would help him in working with my son. His concern
for my son as an only child with and absent father
was most appreciated. I am looking forward to
continued successes for Patrick . . ."

Why we chose
MMA after 5 years at another military school.
"Small class sizes and lots of positive
reinforcement. Coed, helps with socialization. Emphasis on
academics, with military structure. Close to home. More freedom.
"Our cadet did not smoke, drink or have girl problems so we felt he
could handle the freedom and added responsibilities at MMA. The
other school limited freedom and everyone was suspected of violating
the rules Parents must understand and accept the differences in
these schools and begin to help themselves and their children."
Mr. & Mrs. Bill Willauer, parents of Alex, Corps Commander, class of
2005

“It is a place where young people learn to interact with others, where they learn to be accountable, and where they develop skills to become contributing world citizens. The record of the Academy proves that it values its position as a producer of quality that truly builds character and enhances motivation, which encourages life-long learning.” -Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Review Team Leader

"I chose a military school because he needed to be in an environment where he could develop personally. With his leadership role, he has taken on greater responsibilities, more responsibility for his actions, and gained a maturity that would not have happened otherwise.” -Brig. General. (Ret.) Jack Schmitt, father of Jeff Schmitt, Class of 2004

"Before MMA, both boys had low self-esteem. James lacked social skills and did not behave in school. He struggled in large classes and struggled with peer pressure. He started at MMA because he was interested in the military and craved the structure and discipline. Andrew was headed for trouble. He couldn't play sports so he decided to hang out with the 'druggies' and be a thug because they would accept him. MMA has given Jimmy a strong sense of confidence and he learned to function with other people despite marching to a different drummer. He feels he belongs somewhere. Andrew is starting to take pride in his work and his intelligence. The teachers and staff have been so supportive and have given each of them what they need." -Gerri Ferguson, Mother of James and Andrew, Classes of 2003 & 2005

"Before my son arrived at MMA, he wanted deep down to be the best. More than anything else, that opportunity was offered to him at MMA, and he took it. More than that I neither asked for nor could expect." -Robert Handloff, father of 2002 valedictorian Mark Handloff

"I have a debt of gratitude to Massanutten that I doubt I could every repay in that I brought this raw material here when he was in eighth grade, his grades were failing, his attitude was terrible, his behavior was bad, and this was a lifeline, not only for my son but for our family. Over the course of four years, he developed study habits, his grades improved, and he really began to like and identify with what Massanutten had to offer." -Matt Iten, father of 2001 salutatorion and West Point Cadet Chris Iten

"Massanutten Military Academy gave our son structure, pride and a sense of accomplishment." -Mother of a Class of 2001 graduate who entered the Marines

"Before attending MMA, Peter had no desire to attend college. MMA helped him to realize how bright he is and gave him the incentive to want to accomplish. He will be attending the College of Engineering at Drexel University in the Fall." -Joan Palestina of Pennsylvania, mother to Pete Palestina, Class of 2001

"We credit MMA with turning Kristen's life around. We found the teachers, the administration, the military personnel to be very caring and concerned about our daughter. Kristen had no future before attending MMA. She is now enrolled in college, living on her own and supporting herself." -Monta & Jack Kutchen, parents to Kristen Jenkins, Class of 1998

“Because of the small class sizes, I am able to get the help I need.” -Justin Schroeder, Class of 2003

“MMA gives you a chance to be a strong leader. Whether you are commanding the corps or falling into a company, your position is important.” -Dana Miksad, Class of 2004

“It doesn’t change my plans, it just helps me get there.” -An Pham, Class of 2003

“I’ve learned self-dignity and respect for my country and the people around me. I have more confidence talking to people.” -Robert Kern, Class of 2004
