How do I contact my son or
daughter at MMA? If it is an emergency, you may call the
Office of the Commandant, (540) 459-2167, ext. 230, or cell
phone at 540-481-0320. Unlike most private schools, MMA
authorizes cadets to have a basic cell phone. The cell phone can
only be used during designated periods and when on leave or
pass. The cell phone cannot be capable of taking
pictures, accessing to the internet, or transmitting data, etc.
The
mailing address is:

How do I enroll my son or
daughter? Simply contact the Admissions Office for an
Admissions packet. Call toll free 877-466-6222, ext. 262, or
fill out the
inquiry form on this website to start the process.
Will my
child's entrance increase his/her chances to get into a good
college? In most cases, yes; however, a simple review
of past academic performance can be candidly discussed with our
Academic Dean. A realistic assessment can then be made. MMA
provides your cadet with educational opportunities; but, he/she
must take advantage of them.
What is the
difference between an Official and an Unofficial Transcript?
An unofficial transcript can be picked up by the parents
or faxed. An official transcript is signed by the
Registrar, the school seal is affixed, it is sealed in an
envelope and mailed directly to a school, institution or
employer. Transcripts can be requested from the Registrar's
office by calling 540-459-2167, ext. 266. The fee is $5. Get

form.
How quickly
do children adjust to military school life? All kids are
different as is their adjustment period. Normally, a student
will adjust to his/her "new life" within 30 days following
entrance.
What Is JROTC?
What is Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC)? The Junior Reserve Officers’ Training
Corps, or JROTC program, includes full credit courses which provide
interesting classroom instruction combined with the opportunity to
serve the school and community, participate in extracurricular
activities, enjoy active social programs, and have the opportunity
for early leadership responsibilities.
What is the mission of JROTC? To motivate young
people to be better citizens.
What exactly is taught in JROTC class? The Army JROTC curriculum includes
such topics as U.S. military history, physical fitness, human
relations, management, techniques of communication, first aid,
health, military map reading, and drill and ceremonies.
Will I be in the Armed Forces or will I
have to go into the
service? NO! There is absolutely no obligation of any
kind, and most students have no interest in going into the military
after graduation. However, for those who are interested in serving
in the military, there are some real benefits.
What about the instructors? JROTC teachers are retired
military officers and senior noncommissioned officers with more than
20 years of service in the U.S. Army. They are high school faculty
members and employees of MMA like all other teachers and have to be
certified by the U.S. Army to teach JROTC.
What does the course cost? There are no
special costs associated with the course. Course materials,
supplies, and equipment, are covered by the school.
What are the benefits I can gain from the
course? Aside
from the normal benefits of being an exciting and adventure filled
high school course, there are some real benefits for those who want
to take advantage of them:
1.
You can enlist the U.S. Army up to two pay grades (two
promotions)
higher than those who did not take JROTC. You must
successfully complete at least three years of JROTC
courses in high school.
2.
Students who have completed the JROTC program receive
advanced placement (credit for first two years of Senior ROTC) in
college ROTC programs.
3.
JROTC instructors have been very successful each year in
helping high school students obtain college ROTC scholarships. The
JROTC program also has the ability to nominate cadets for
appointment to any of the federal service academies (West Point, Air
Force
Academy, and Naval Academy). ROTC scholarships worth $64,000 or more
(a total budget of over $100 million is awarded annually) and
Service Academy appointments worth up to $400,000 each are awarded
annually to highly qualified high school students from across the
nation.
What kind of credit can I earn for JROTC?
In nearly every high school in America, the course
carries full elective credit toward graduation, just like all the
other academic courses.
What Are Some of the Activities Available to JROTC Students?
The JROTC unit supports a wide range of activities, with the exact
number depending on the interests of the students. There are summer
camps, group-sponsored social activities and formal military events.
There are numerous ways to become involved and to have fun.
What Kind of Recognition Can I Get for My Participation in
JROTC? There are a large number of awards, which are given for
participation and achievement in JROTC. Some are given by the unit,
some by the Academy and others by civic and patriotic
groups. All are available for everyone to seek while enrolled at
MMA. Involvement, effort, and being an active part of the group are
the main requirements. MMA varsity letters may be earned for those
that participate in and compete with the JROTC Drill team, Color
Guard, and Raider team.
What About Leadership Training? The
JROTC program offers formal instruction in leadership. The course
also encourages practical application by giving the students the
opportunity to lead
their MMA Corps units, extracurricular groups and manage many
aspects of the JROTC program.
Who Can Enroll? Every ninth, tenth,
eleventh, or twelfth grader who is enrolled at MMA must be enrolled
in JROTC.
Athletics
What supplies and/or equipment does
my son/daughter need to bring for sports? The best answer to
this question is to contact the
Athletic Director,
540-459-2167, ext. 233. Most equipment is supplied for the
athletes; however, there may be additional personal equipment
that needs to be purchased by the parents.
Does my child have
to participate in a sport? There are three sports seasons
during the school year and every cadet here is required to
participate in an activity during sports time (1600-1730) all
year. Every cadet must play a sport during at least two of the
three seasons. This is done not only to keep the cadets active, but to
ensure that they are receiving adequate physical education. Many different activities are offered, not just
Varsity Sports. Contact the
Athletic Director,
540-459-2167, ext. 233, for more information about the sports program.
If I am a middle
school student, can I participate in a Varsity Sport?
Virginia Federation of High Schools rules state that a student
must at least be in the eighth grade to participate in Varsity
Sports. However, middle school cadets who are not in the eighth
grade are offered other options to fulfill their sport
requirement from 1600-1730. A cadet must be at least 13 years
old to participate in shooting sports.
